This year marks the 67th year of business for M&M Cleaners, located in downtown Keego Harbor. In 1949, Frank Marriott and two partners each contributed $100 towards the purchase of a small drop store on Orchard Lake Road. This drop store would eventually become M&M Cleaners. Two years into the partnership, Frank bought out his partners and began a dry cleaning route to increase business. He married Elizabeth West in 1953, and the two worked as a team to build the cleaners while raising their family. For sixteen years they operated out of a leased building before moving to their current location in 1969. The Marriotts soon found that they were so busy they needed to hire help. Some of the people they hired stayed with the company for more than 20 years before retiring. The Marriotts attribute much of their success to the devotion and hard work of their employees, both then and now.
In 1976, M&M Cleaners became a corporation, with sons Mike and Cliff serving as vice-presidents. The family continued to build up business by creating a strip mall called Sawyers’ Landing, with the cleaners serving as the anchor. They began taking steps to increase the quality of their work. These steps included the installation of an industry specific computer system, installation of solvent reclaiming equipment which conformed to cleaner air standards, and the design and installation of their own shirt laundry. The Marriotts also introduced wet-cleaning, which, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is the safest professional method of cleaning a garment. Wet-cleaning does not use hazardous materials. It does not produce hazardous waste or air pollution, and it reduces the potential for water and soil contamination. The products used in the wet-cleaning process are more mild than home laundry products. Most recently, M&M Cleaners has introduced a service called Clean-&-Steam Lite. This service provides professional care for polos, t-shirts, and jeans with less finishing resulting in a reduced cost.
M&M Cleaners is known not only for the quality of their work but also for their ability to handle garments that require special attention. Dunham’s and Eddie Bauer recommend them for cleaning and repair on down goods, couturiers such as Lillie Rubin recommend them for care of high quality clothing, and many area bridal salons refer customers to M&M for altering, cleaning, and preservation of wedding gowns. M&M Cleaners also has the capacity to care for and repair beadwork, shoes, and drapes. They care for the clothing of many of the men and women who travel nationally with auto shows as well as local celebrities. In 2006 Lucky magazine called M&M the best dry cleaner in the Metro Detroit area.
